The story

Vashon Island hides delicious secrets

Nano is seven, and she is expecting a quiet summer at her grandparents' self-sustaining farm. Berry picking. Board games. The usual.

What she finds instead is that their plain farmhouse kitchen is holding out on her. Guided by forest spirits, talking bees, and dreams lit from the inside, she follows the cooking out of the kitchen and into a forest where the recipes grow on the trees.

Wonder isn't in faraway castles or distant galaxies. It's in your kitchen, your garden, and your grandparents' stories.

What's inside

A year of cooking, season by season

Written for homeschooling families, kitchen-curious kids, and any parent after something screen-free that still holds a child's attention.

  • Seasonal sections with five to eight easy organic recipes each, winter through autumn.

  • Whimsical dishes the whole table will eat, from Mid Winter Golden Nog to Grandpa's Wild Mushroom Bolognese.

  • Enchanting stories and illustrations that bring each recipe to life.

  • Real lessons in sustainability, cooking skills, and plant lore, folded into the adventure rather than bolted on.

  • A heartwarming journey back toward family, food, and the natural world.

Chef Dani Maya

An only child raised by her grandparents on a small island near Seattle, Danielle spent her early years with enough time alone to learn directly from the land, from spirits, and inside her own dreams. The farmhouse kitchen in this book is not invented.

She has since lived in Ethiopia and now works to build sustainable schools in Honduras. Cooking Habesha food to share around a table is one of her favourite things in the world.

She believes freedom and joy spring from a well-fed inner child.
